Weight loss is impossible if you are not motivated to achieve your goals. You can not simply hope or wish that you will become healthy. You have to put the work in, and to do so; you have to find your motivation.

Without motivation, you will never fully commit to what you truly want, and you will not live your life to its maximum potential. So the question becomes…. How do you find your motivation?

The answer is very simple. Goals.

Setting goals is key to finding your motivation. In fact, the best way to get the ball rolling is to start with one simple goal and let it snowball from there.

Start with a goal; one single, solitary, specific goal. Maybe it’s to walk one mile. Maybe it’s to clean your kitchen or call your mom. It doesn’t really matter; you just need to pick something that you know you need/want to do, and then you need to go do it, immediately. Don’t wait or procrastinate.

As soon as you finish with that one, pick the next one. And then, keep doing that.

Completing a goal gives you momentum, and motivation and momentum go hand in hand. You could tread water and swim in circles forever if you didn’t know what direction you were heading. Once you pick a goal and stay making progress towards it, eventually you will get there. If you know where the shore is, and you keep swimming in that direction, eventually you will get there.

After you start to complete some goals, a beautiful thing called motivation begins to emerge. You may not have thought that you were motivated at all when you picked that first goal, but after a few successful goal accomplishments, your brain starts to crave more success.

This month, we’ve been talking about bariatric surgery and there is a common misconception that surgery is the quick and easy fix, and those that get it lack the motivation to lose the weight on their own.

Oh how wrong that assumption would be. Patients who undergo bariatric surgery have to be incredibly motivated individuals, because they must endure a rigorous 3 – 6 month preparation period, prior to ever having surgery. They have to be mentally focused, physically prepared, adhere to a strict diet and meet certain weight loss goals before any surgeon will perform the surgery.

One other thing that I’d like to touch on is that if you want to effectively tackle your goals, you have to be a mental space that is not distracted by too much going on. You can’t stay focused on what you are trying to accomplish if you have 85 million other things going on in your life. If you want to lose weight, you can’t have so much going on that you have no time to invest into that goal, or you will never lose the weight.
