“JOINT REPLACEMENT INSTITUTE OF OREGON”
AT WILLAMETTE VALLEY MEDICAL CENTER AWARDED
(McMinnville, OR- March 21, 2018) – Willamette Valley Medical Center (WVMC) today announced it has earned the Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval® for Advanced Certification for Total Hip and Total Knee Replacement. Advanced certification is for Joint Commission-accredited hospitals, critical access hospitals and ambulatory surgery centers that demonstrate exceptional quality, consistency and safety in patient care across the entire continuum of care from the time a patient schedules for surgery to 90-days after surgery.
WVMC underwent a rigorous two-day on-site review February 6th-7th, 2018. Joint Commission experts evaluated compliance with advanced disease-specific care standards and total hip and total knee replacement requirements, including orthopedic and anesthetic consultation, as well as pre-operative, intra-operative and post-operative follow-up care.
“Achieving Advanced Total Hip and Total Knee Replacement Certification recognizes Willamette Valley Medical Center’s commitment to provide care in a safe and efficient manner for patients,” said Patrick Phelan, executive director, Hospital Business Development, The Joint Commission. “The advanced certification will help WVMC provide coordinated and comprehensive care to patients undergoing a total hip or total knee replacement.”
“Willamette Valley Medical Center is pleased to be the first Hospital in the state of Oregon to receive Advanced Certification from The Joint Commission,” added Peter Hofstetter, WVMC Chief Executive Officer. “With the number of people undergoing hip or knee replacement surgery increasing, it is imperative that we provide the highest quality care possible.”
WVMC’s Joint Replacement Institute was opened in 2010 under the leadership of Orthopedic Surgeon and Medical Director, Michael Vessely, MD. “This recognition by the Joint Commission further validates our commitment to excellence for patients undergoing total hip and total knee replacement surgery,” said Dr. Vessely. “Our surveyor emphasized repeatedly that he was particularly impressed with our processes and protocols as well as our team approach to patient care. I believe it is our culture of collaboration that sets us apart and allows us to provide high quality care with a personalized approach for patients.” Dr. Mark Thomas joined the Institute in January of 2017 and practices general orthopedics including joint replacement surgery. He echoed Dr. Vessely’s remarks and added that “It is not the work of two surgeons’ that earned this accreditation, but the work of the entire Joint Replacement team. You aren’t a number with us, we know your name.”
Previously, the Joint Replacement Institute achieved core certification from The Joint Commission for total hip and total knee replacement surgery, starting in 2013 and re-certified in 2015. Advanced certification was developed by The Joint Commission in response to the growing number of patients undergoing total hip or total knee replacement surgery, as well as the increased focus on clinical evidence-based patient care as it relates to pain management, quality of life issues, functional limitation in mobility and the return to normal daily activities. This certification is also awarded for a two-year period.
