Despite its reputation for gray skies, the Pacific Northwest accounts for a disproportionately high number of the country’s skin cancer cases. Silver Falls Dermatology now offers Mohs Micrographic Surgery, a specialized skin cancer treatment at its McMinnville location.
Board-Certified Mohs Surgeon William Lear, MD is one of only a handful of Fellowship-trained Mohs surgeon in Oregon. He has been with Silver Falls Dermatology since 2008, and is Director of Dermatological Surgery.

During Mohs Micrographic Surgery, layers of cancer-containing skin are progressively removed and examined until only cancer-free tissue remains. The goal is to remove as much of the skin cancer as possible, while doing minimal damage to surrounding healthy tissue. The entire process of removal and examination of the cancerous tissue and subsequent reconstruction is completed in one office visit, under local anesthesia. The process takes two-four hours depending on the size and complexity of the tumor.
In the past three decades, more people have had skin cancer than all other cancers combined, according to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). Mohs surgery has come to be accepted as the single most effective technique for removing Basal Cell Carcinoma (BCC) and Squamous Cell Carcinoma, with a cure rate of 98 percent or better.
Mohs surgery and resulting reconstruction are generally covered by insurance, including Medicaid and Medicare.
Dr. Lear performs Mohs surgery in Salem, Corvallis and McMinnville.
Silver Falls Dermatology & Allergy was founded in 2006 by Medical Director John Young, MD and offers medical, surgical, pediatric and cosmetic dermatology at ten locations in Oregon and Washington.
