Last year Willamette Valley Medical Center provided $19.2 million in free or discounted care for friends and neighbors in our community. Here’s the story of one of those families — Dave and Nancy Palasky of McMinnville.
Last fall, Dave felt weak and struggled with his breathing. When two rounds of antibiotics did not take him down the road to recovery, a CT scan showed a large pool of fluid in his lungs. He and Nancy immediately came to our emergency room.Â
Our emergency physician drained the fluid from Dave’s lungs and admitted him for the night. But the CT scan also revealed a more serious condition — stage 4 lung cancer. Ten days later, Dave had trouble breathing again and returned to our emergency room.Â
After we stabilized his heart, an ambulance transported Dave to OHSU, where he began receiving radiation and chemotherapy treatments.Â
Their bill added up, and Dave and Nancy had no health insurance. Because they qualified for free care, we wrote off their entire bill. We also contacted other medical providers to ask for discounts, and we helped them apply for insurance through Cover Oregon.
“They were wonderful!†says Nancy, and not just because of the financial help, but also for the nurturing and professional care.Â
