Wow, what an honor!
In June 2012, the Leapfrog Group, an independent nonprofit organization that collects data on hospital safety, published a report on the safety of hospitals. Willamette Valley Medical Center was one of only 2 hospitals in Oregon that received an “A†rating.
The grade was based on 26 safety measures that are reported in multiple ways from all hospitals related to preventable harm and medical errors. Our score is such a great validation of all the hard work that we do every day to assure that patients who enter our doors do not experience complications that could prolong their stay or create more health problems for them.
Then in early July, Consumer Reports magazine published their first ever ranking of hospitals. 1,159 hospitals nationwide were reviewed for their safety of patient care, based on six categories of care:
- hospital-acquired infections
- communication about new medications and discharge
- overuse of CT scanning
- complications, and mortality
The data comes from some of the same sources as the Leapfrog Group’s hospital ranking. Again, we are ranked as one of the top hospitals in Oregon, tied with 4 other hospitals in the State for third place, just two points away from the first place ranking.
I acknowledge that we don’t always get it right. Sometimes people just don’t connect personally and can leave a patient and/or family with a less than ideal interaction, which of course colors the perception of their care. In addition, sometimes it takes longer than we want to diagnose a patient’s condition.
However, each of the above ratings validates what we know about the care we give patients and our commitment to providing safe patient care. I am so proud to say that I work for Willamette Valley Medical Center and with the great group of healthcare providers that also proudly work here.
Our teams will continue to meet to review the care we provide our patients and to continue to make improvements wherever we can. Our goal is to provide you with “amazing care†every time you come in. We take this mission statement very seriously and continually look for ways that we can make you know that you matter. If I can be of assistance to you in any way, I hope you will contact me. carolyn.lash@MyWVMC.com
