Spring has sprung! It’s so gorgeous outside lately. Of course we have the usual spring showers, but in general this time of year is blooming with beauty.
Weather like this inspires me to get outside and move. Yesterday my sister-in-law and I went to the Keizer dog park. It was so much fun seeing our dogs play with the other puppies. But most of all, it was great to get out in the fresh air for awhile after being in school all day.
I guess the keys to motivating myself to exercise are to make it social, fun and varied. When Katie called me yesterday to ask if I wanted to join her at the dog park, I was excited to be able to hang out with her. I probably would not have stayed as long as we did if I did not have her to talk to. Having that social aspect makes working out so much more interesting and keeps me from getting bored.
I am excited to join the local walking group because I hope to find a bunch of new workout friends.
As for the aspect of exercise being fun and varied, I think in order for me to stick with a routine I need excitement. I get bored really easily, so in order to keep my attention, I like to mix things up.
One of the things I learned in my weight training class was circuit training where there is a mix of exercises, not just focus on one part of the body. By doing this and trying new walking routes, it pushes me to stick to my exercise routine. But this nice weather opens so many more possibilities for a variety of exercises. One of my favorites is swimming, which is more fun when it’s warm outside. I also would like to get into hiking.
So I look forward to taking my exercise routine to the next level. My weight training coach is writing me a custom plan that will compliment with the walking group. This combination should help me boost my weight loss and help me tone up. So now that the weather is good, it’s going to be fun exploring some hiking trails, swimming at the lake and going to the dog park.
