Electroencephalogram (EEG)
Electroencephalogram (EEG) is used to detect and record the electrical impulses of the brain to help diagnose or rule out diseases and/or injuries which include epilepsy, brain tumor, stroke, liver disease and brain injury.
To prepare for an EEG:
- Have clean dry hair (no oils, mousse, gel, hairspray, etc.)
- Have a good meal one hour before the procedure and should be sleep deprived. For infants hold the bottle-feeding 3 hours prior to testing but bring the bottle in to the center to give during the procedure.
- No caffeine (soft drinks with caffeine, coffee or hot chocolate) for 12 hours prior to the test.
- Go to bed late before the procedure and to get up early in order that you will be drowsy for part of the procedure. For example, a pediatric patient scheduled for 10:30 a.m. should stay up late and wake up at 5 a.m.
- Report to registration at least 10 minutes prior to the appointment.
- If the patient is to have sedation for the procedure, the effects of the sedation will last for approximate 4 hours. The patient or their caregiver must make arrangements with a responsible adult to drive the patient home after the procedure.
